Uman-Botoshan offensive operation

The Uman-Botoshan operation became part of a large-scale offensive in Ukraine in March-April 1944. Its result was the liberation of right-bank of Ukraine, the northern regions of Pridnestrovie and Bessarabia  and the entry of the Red Army to the state border of the USSR.

On May 18, a presentation of a new set  of  stamps took place at the Tiraspol Main Post Office.

The stamps represent monuments dedicated to the Great Patriotic War located in settlements liberated during the Uman-Botoshan  operation:

Monument to military pilot S.I. Kharkhalup  in the village of Konstantinovka. Senior Lieutenant Semyon Ivanovich Kharkhalup in the first days of the Great Patriotic War conducted 52 air battles, destroying three enemy aircrafts. In one of the battles  he managed to shoot down a German bomber with a ramming technique. On the morning of June 30  1941 Semyon Ivanovich died in an unequal battle with enemy fighters. His plane crashed on the outskirts of his native village in front of fellow villagers watching the battle  among whom were the pilot’s parents.

Monument at the mass grave of Soviet soldiers in the village of Lunga (outskirts of Dubossary). Figure of a warrior and a boy looking west. The soldier extended one arm forward and put his other arm around the boy’s shoulders. The outstretched arm symbolizes that the warrior is protecting the child from the danger approaching from the west. The mass grave contains the ashes of the Red Army soldiers who died for the liberation of the village of Lunga – 97 people. Civilians shot by the Nazis are  41 people. The names of 134  fellow villagers who died on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War are inscribed on the marble slabs .

Monument at the mass grave of Soviet soldiers in the village of Gidirim. This is the largest monument in the Rybnitsa region. It includes sculptures of a liberating warrior, a mother with a child, a militiaman  and a grieving mother. The Memorial contains the grave of two unknown soldiers who died on June 28, 1941. 311 residents of the village of Gidirim were called to the front of the Great Patriotic War. More than a hundred were awarded medals “For Courage”, “For Military Valor”, the Order of the Red Star, and the Order of Alexander Nevsky. 128 soldiers never returned home.
