On May 22, 1916, Nicholay II and his family visited Bender during the height of World War I. The visit was part of a review of Russian army units. The royal family – his wife Empress Alexandra Feodorovna , their daughters Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia and their son Tsarevich Alexei were accompanying the monarch were. During their stay in the city the Romanovs visited a military hospital and prayed at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. On May 24, events were held in Bender to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Romanov imperial family’s visit. A Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the Transfiguration Cathedral.
After the liturgy, a religious procession took place through the streets of Bendery to the chapel near the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. There, a prayer service was held to the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers and a memorial litany for the defenders of the Fatherland. Then a commemorative envelope was ceremoniously cancelled for the anniversary of the royal family’s visit. The seals were left by President Vadim Krasnoselsky, Bishop Savva, Speaker Tatyana Zalevskaya, Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Nyagu, and Head of the Bendery State Administration Roman Ivanchenko.
